Finding Your Voice: Why Discovering Your Vocal Range Matters

2 min read

So what is vocal range? Vocal range refers to the span of notes you can comfortably sing, from your lowest to your highest note. Everyone's voice is different, so discovering where your voice sits can help you better understand and identify areas for development. Being aware of your range also helps you understand your vocal registers and transition points, which can help you work on different qualities in your voice and work on blending through your registers.

Why is knowing your vocal range important?

1. Understanding your voice

  • Offers a better understanding of how your voice works

  • Identify where you feel comfortable in singing

  • Helps measure progress in extending your range

  • Identifies areas of development

2. Finding songs that suit you

  • Knowing your vocal range can help you choose songs that complement your voice

  • Gives you a guide to look for songs within your range

3. Developing your vocal technique

  • Your vocal range isn't fixed - With consistent practice, the right vocal exercises and an understanding of healthy technique, you can gradually develop greater flexibility and strength in your voice

Try these vocal exercises to explore how your voice feels and responds as you move between your lower and upper registers

1. Vocal Sirens

  • Starting in your lower register, gradually slide up towards your upper register, then gently back down again.

  • Try this exercise on a hum or an 'Oo' vowel.

  • Focus on noticing how the sensations change as you move through your range.

2. Octave Arpeggios

  • This is a great exercise for exploring a wider section of your vocal range and working through different registers.

  • Follow the sequence: 1 – 3 – 5 – 8 – 5 – 3 – 1.

  • Focus on maintaining a comfortable, consistent sound as you move from your lower to upper register and back again.

  • Start on a hum or an 'Oo' vowel.

I acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have an intrinsic connection to the land and were the First Peoples to share stories, music and voices in this country. I respect and acknowledge their Elders, past and present.
